New: Premium Backup for Ultimate Peace of Mind
Table of Contents
Your website is the backbone of your online presence, representing countless hours of hard work, financial and marketing investment. At SiteGround, we understand the paramount importance of protecting this valuable asset. Knowing from experience that every website should have backups to restore from, over a decade ago, we introduced automated daily backups for every site hosted at SiteGround. Building on this foundation, later on we launched geographically distributed ones at no extra cost for our clients.
And now, we’re happy to introduce our newest Premium Backup solution designed to ensure that you can quickly create, restore and download from multiple backups of your website in any situation.
What is the new Premium Backup service?
Our Premium Backup service is a comprehensive solution that provides up to 60 additional backup copies of your site and allows downloading all your backups to your local machine. And that’s on top of the daily backups every SiteGround site comes with!

Automatic Backups Made Every Hour
SiteGround’s Premium Backup includes hourly backups strategically created in the last 48 hours. This way you can easily restore a recent, up-to-date version of your website and prevent data loss.
Hourly backups are a must-have for most websites, but especially for those whose content or backend are often updated, receive online orders or are using a lot of plugins for different functionalities. In case of an accident, an update gone wrong or anything that results in your website not looking or performing as expected, having a recent backup to restore from is absolutely crucial. Having multiple hourly backups enables you to easily locate the one you need to restore from and in just a few clicks specify whether you need a specific file, email or your whole website restored in an instant.
On-demand Backups at Your Convenience
With our Premium Backup service, you get 5 on-demand backup slots for a full backup of your site, whenever you need it. If your plan already has on-demand backups included, those 5 will be added as additional slots you can use to create even more backups at different times.
Introducing a big change? Testing a new design? Want to capture a version of your website that you may want to return to later? You can do all of this safely with an on-demand backup. Just log in to your Site Tools, name your new backup and once created, you can easily download and restore from later.
Extra Daily Automatic Backups for Extended Coverage
When it comes to backups, the more the merrier. With our Premium Backup Service you get 7 additional automated daily backups on top of the ones included in your plan. This makes a total of up to 37 backup copies on shared hosting plans and 14 backup copies on Cloud. With an extended backup coverage you have more options to restore from and a larger period covered so you can rest assured that even older versions are safely stored and available for download.
Convenient Restores and Backup Downloads
Our new premium backups also allow you to easily restore files, emails, databases, or your whole website. What is more, you can even download any backup to your local computer, where each downloaded backup contains the website’s files, emails and databases.
The download option adds one more layer of security allowing you to keep a backup of your site on your local machine, too. We highly recommend that such copies are created and kept by each site owner, as this increases the redundancy and minimizes further the risk of data loss.

While there are plenty of reputable 3rd party backup solutions out there, most of them rely on plugins to create those backups which in turn has an effect on cpu/executions and overall server performance, especially if you run them when a site is busy. Can we assume that SG backups, particularly the hourly ones will have no effect on website resource usage or performance? At least I have signed up for premium on 2 sites so far and will be watching, but as yet, I see no change in cpu/executions.

Hey there, Sean, thank you for your question and for choosing our Premium Backup service for your websites. You are absolutely right that our backup system, including the hourly backups, operates seamlessly in the background with zero impact on your website’s resources. Our infrastructure manages these backups in a way that does not use your site's CPU or executions, ensuring that your website performance remains unaffected. If you have any further questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our support team. They are available 24/7 and will be more than happy to help.

Is it true that with the Premium Backup it is still not possible to save a specific backup for a longer period?
Lina Asenova Siteground Team
Hey there, thank you for your question! With the Premium Backup service, hourly backups are maintained for 48 hours, and the automatic daily backups are kept for an additional 7 days, totaling 37 days if you are on shared hosting. Unfortunately, it's not possible to save a specific backup for longer than the designated period. If you need to keep a backup for a longer time, you can manually download a copy at any time. If you have any other questions or need help managing your backups, please contact our support team through the Help Center in your account. They’re always happy to assist.

How would you use a manually downloaded backup to restore a website? One that is saved to local machine and not on siteground's backup list? In case you need to go back for more that the 37 days for some reason. I hope to never need that but would like to know what the purpose of the manual downloads are if you can't upload them back.
Lina Asenova Siteground Team
Great question! The main purpose of the manually downloaded backups is to give you extra peace of mind. By keeping a copy of your website on your local device, you're adding an extra layer of security. This way, you can restore your website even if the data is older than the backups we keep on our servers. You can restore a manually downloaded backup at any time by using the File Manager in Site Tools or an FTP client to upload the files back to your hosting account. If you have any other questions or need assistance with uploading a backup, don’t hesitate to reach out to our support team. They’ll be more than happy to help.

Is there an automated way to download the backup with Premium backup? or to automatically send it to an SFTP server or cloud storage service?
Lina Asenova Siteground Team
Hi Ben, with our Premium Backup service, you can manually download backups through Site Tools. However, automatic downloads or direct transfers to SFTP servers or cloud storage are not supported.
